“FAST BAR” IN HBR”
In HBR the POS can behave differently based on the various settings you apply to employee JOBS. So the POS can act one way for Waiters and a different way for Bartenders (which is generally what you want because they way they work is very different from each other).
As it relates to this specific issue lets just take an example of a typical restaurant that has some tables and also has a busy bar. And we have two different employees, each working a different job:
Empl1 is a 'server/waiter and Empl2 is a 'bartender’
The server/waiter is working the tables and we want them to use the ticket grid to start a new ticket for each table, and also to use the ticket grid to go back into those tables as needed for doing whatever they need to do on each ticket.
In the bar we do a combination of service formats: some tabs, but also lots of ‘fast bar’ transactions where they just want to ring up an item (a beer or two for example), quickly pay it out, then move on to the next order WITHOUT having to touch ‘NEW TICKET’ from the ticket grid. They just want to ‘turn and burn’ through their customers lined up 3-deep down the bar.
To handle this efficiently in HBR a JOB has the setting for LOGIN type:
The LOGIN setting determines how the POS behaves when an employee is logged in for each job.
For Bartenders, Quick-Serve / Fast Casual Cashier type of roles, the LOGIN type ‘Counter Service’ is the best option. The setting description for Counter Service is:
A new ticket will be automatically created at login. Use this mode for users that require the ability to very quickly ring up and pay out a ticket
For Waitstaff/Server type of roles, you would typically set LOGIN type to ‘Table Service’. The setting description for Table Service is:
The ticket grid view is shown upon login. Use this mode for users that perform table service such as a waiter or waitress.
Something that is not present in the description for Counter Service is the fact that not only will the new ticket be automatically created at login (without the user having to select ‘New Ticket’, but it will also automatically begin a new ticket immediately after each ticket is paid and closed out, and once again without having to touch New Ticket or even see the ticket grid- it’s bypassed completely.
And even in this mode, the bartender can still start Bar Tabs, and Pre-auths and access the grid to work on those tickets any time they are not doing ‘fast transactions’.
So this combination of automatically starting the first ticket at login, and then the auto-repeat for each new ticket thereafter provides and very fast and efficient ‘fast bar’ workflow for busy bars and counter service operations.
Here’s a brief video (3m 40sec) showing how the POS workflow differs between Empl1 (who is a Server/waitstaff) and Empl2 (who is a bartender).
